The diesel engines listed below are currently in use today, by various marques of automobiles, and commercial vehicles, of the Volkswagen Group.
Since the Volkswagen Group is European, the engine performance ratings are published using the International System of Units (commonly abbreviated "SI"), a modern form of the metric system of figures. The engines will have been tested by a Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) accredited testing facility, to either the original 80/1269/EEC, or the later 1999/99/EC standards. These metric standards for motive power are quoted in either Pferdestärke (PS) (~= 735.5 watts (W), ~= 0.98632 hp (SAE) - sometimes incorrectly referred to as 'metric horsepower'), or kilowatts (kW). In case of conflict, the metric power figure will be stated in kilowatts (kW). For the turning force generated by the engine, the Newton metre (Nm) will be the reference figure of torque.
As with the discontinued Volkswagen Group diesel engines, while the Golf may have started the diesel craze in Europe, every diesel engine in each generation of the Volkswagen Golf, has been offered in Industrial applications, and has since had impressive field results on par with a Isuzu, Kubota, or Yanmar Industrial diesel engine in Industrial applications, and has been as much of a workhorse as much as the latter Japanese choices.
The diesel engines which Volkswagen Group previously used to employ are in the list of discontinued Volkswagen Group diesel engines.

1.9 TDI 66-118kW
The 1.9 TDI is the emblematic turbodiesel from Volkswagen Group, which developed the notion of various outputs of the same engine. In the Passat, the 90 hp (67 kW/90 bhp) was introduced in 1993, the 110 hp (82 kW/110 bhp) in 1996 and the first TDI with Pumpe Düse direct injection in 1998 with 115 hp (86 kW/115 bhp). The EA086 is built in Puebla, Pue., Mexico, for North America. These have progressively been discontinued, and now only the new 105 hp (78 kW/105 bhp) version is used on new models, like the Golf V, the Jetta and the new Passat. See Turbocharged Direct Injection.
